Homily - Third Sunday of Lent - March 23, 2014

Eph. 5:1-9; Lk. 11:14-28

There are two aspects to the Lenten season.  I don’t like to use these words because both are good, but there is a positive aspect and a negative aspect.  In the negative aspect, we take something away.  We sacrifice something willingly, or we give something up, a temptation, a sin.  Someone once said the fine art of sculpture is the art of taking away what is not necessary, and something wonderful appears.  Lent is like this.

Archbishop Sample - Homily on the Extraordinary Form

Excellent Homily by Archbishop Sample. On March 1, 2014 Archbishop Alexander Sample of the Archdiocese of  Portland in Oregon celebrated a Pontifical High Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the Brigittine Monastery "Our Lady of Consolation" in Amity, Oregon. The Mass was the crowning celebration of a 3-day  conference on Gregorian Chant and the role of sacred music in the  liturgy.

Homily - 1st Sunday of Lent - March 9, 2014

2 Cor. 6:1-10; Mt. 4:1-11

Each year, as we begin the Lenten Season, the Gospel of the first Sunday is the temptation in the desert.  Lent is a great season of grace for the Church.  We do not go into this season alone, but with the Lord.  It gives us inspiration that He was true to the struggle.  It gives us sure hope knowing that He has overcome the temptations that face us.  It should not be lost on us that we enter into this endeavor as a Church.  The fact that all of us go out into the desert of Lent gives us encouragement and strength in time of weakness.

Homily - Quinquagesima Sunday - March 2, 2014

1 Cor. 13:1-13; Lk. 18:31-43

Each of the Gospels takes into account this journey of our Lord from Galilee to Jerusalem.  His disciples are with Him.  He teaches them, He teaches them the way of the Cross.  And they do not understand.  There is a message here for all time, and for us today, especially as we observe this Quinquagesima Sunday and prepare for Lent.

Fr. Illo's Blog - "Latin Mass Keeps Us Wondering"

This morning I had the “Latin” Mass for the first time in two weeks. I can offer Ordinary Form Mass blindfolded with one arm tied behind my back, but I still tremble before beginning the Extraordinary Form Mass. What if I mess up the Prayers at the Foot? Will I remember each of the 12 times to kiss the altar and the 12 times to raise my eyes to heaven? What if I’ve forgotten the final Leonine Prayer? And then, this morning, there was the convoluted, beautiful, mysterious Latin of the Collect—somewhat incomprehensible to me when looking it over before Mass.  Read more
